Sir Nigel Sheinwald, Britain's Ambassador in Washington, was last night thrust into political controversy after the leak to a newspaper of a seven-page candid assessment he delivered on Barack Obama.
His letter to Downing Street, written earlier this summer ahead of the Democratic nominee's trip to Europe, contains a level of criticism that will be deeply embarrassing to the Government.
He describes Mr Obama's "decidedly liberal" voting record in the Senate where "the main impression is of someone who was finding his feet, and then got diverted by his presidential ambitions".
Some of his comments, suggesting there is "little track record to refer back to" and that charges of elitism or being aloof "are not entirely unfair" may be seized upon by John McCain's campaign which has consistently sought to portray Mr Obama as inexperienced and out-of-touch with working class voters.
The letter to Number 10 predicts there is a potential clash with a future Obama Administration over Iran, even though British Embassy officials have consistently gone on record denying such claims.
"If Obama wins, we will need to consider with him the articulation between (a) his desire for 'unconditional' dialogue with Iran and (b) our and the [United Nations Security Council]'s requirement of prior suspension of enrichment before the nuclear negotiations proper can begin," wrote Sir Nigel.
For several months, British diplomats have been warned by Sir Nigel to be careful about making any comments that might impact the US presidential race. The Ambassador himself became "highly agitated" according to one source when an article praising Mr Obama appeared under Gordon Brown's name last month.
Sir Nigel's letter is complimentary about the Democrat in places. Mr Obama's speeches are "elegant" and "mesmerising", he is "highly intelligent" and has "star quality", he said. But he also warns that "policies are still evolving" and that if elected he will "have less of a track record than any recent president".
While approving of his "progressive position on climate change" and "balanced approach to the big security issues", he raises concerns over Mr Obama's protectionist leanings on trade.
A British Embassy spokesman said last night: "We are not going to comment on a leaked document. We are totally neutral."

Only an American could link a nations health care system with the sort of car they drive!
paul, Cumbria, UK
Obama is espousing the economic policies of the 1930s, the cultural values of the 1960s (we see how well those have worked out), and a view of human personhood that dates from the 18th Century, the 19th at best. And the health care system of Cuba, where the average car dates from the 1950s. Change?
John, Sarasota, USA
The UK and US police should investigate this alleged leak and see actually whether it was a negligent leak or a deliberate leak. What on earth is the UK government doing sticking its nose into other Countries affairs for , they have caused enough damage here in UK without starting on USA.
alan, london, uk
"Obama is so liberal he would appoint Rosie O'Donnell"...I don't need to make the argument against this. Just look at his running mate, Joe Biden: against gay marriage, a centrist on most issues, working with Republicans, for over 20 years. Now, look at McCain's partner, Palin. Rosie may be better
Patricia Donnelly, Brooklyn, USA
The Ambassador can say whatever he want to say about Mr. Obama. Name me one American who had the experience of President of The United States of America before becoming President?
William, Oxford, England
Obama is intellectually superior to anything the Republicans can muster. There is a landslide in the offing here and the haters can go cry in their drinks. As for the Republican party do not look for salvation in 8 years time...Chelsea Clinton might have something to say about that. You're HISTORY!
vernon butcher, basingstoke, hampshire
Well, Obama may actually make it. I'm not surprised. This is a country who voted Bush in twice. Not surprising at all. As the fact checkers are checking the debates it is clear that BIden made the most mis-statements by a long shot.
candace O, miami, usa
Sometimes, it is better to get a view from the outside looking in. I believe the Ambassador has it right. Obama is so liberal if he gets into office he's likely to appoint Rosie O'Donell and Barabara Streisand to the Supreme Court. He's arrogant and aloof, not to mention woefully inexperienced.
Arlene, Fresno California, USA
It's called 'calling a spade a spade'. O'bama is a true Liberal and very proud of it . It's just that America is not.
Bob Hall, new york, United States
Actually, he is a rich man - though admittedly only through marriage, not his own skill and judgment. His limitations and flaws of character have been clearly visible in his campaign style and tactical decisions.
Not fair? On the contrary, he thoroughly deserves the position he's now in.
Simon, Washington DC, USA
McSame and Palin Comparison....there's just no debate over which is the better ticket.
OBAMA - BIDEN '08
Thank God!!!
markm, Seattle, US
A landslide is on the cards for Obama if things continue the way they are going at the moment
Brian Musah, Hertford,
Jay McCaffrey, Hollywood ~ You have it backwards. Clinton and Dems forced through deregulation of banking and giving of mortgages to one and all - regardless of finances. McCain brought bills in '05&'06 to investigate Fannie & Freddie and Dems. blocked.
Nona, New York City, USA
So what if he is a liberal. If you look up liberal in the dictionary you'd see Ronald Regan was a liberal too. Don't let the Republicants change definitions
Nanc, Saint Paul,
After all the comments by ministers who should have known better. Now Number 10 manages to leak an ambassadors confidential letter. At from the leaked letter, at least H.M.'s Ambassador seems to have common sense.
EAG, Maritimes, Canada
When has the opinion of any foreign government elected anyone? Do the Brits care what I think of Gordon Brown and his policies?
Rebecca, Alabama, USA
All of the reforms put in by Dems to prevent the Great Depression from happening again have been removed by the Republicans, they called it "Deregulation." So here we go again, 1929 again. Obama understands this. McCain is still calling for more deregulation -- McCain is doomed and rightfully so.
Jay McCaffrey, Hollywood, Florida, USA
Go Obama! It looks like Palin power only lasted about a week then.
James McCullough, Queens, New York, USA
The begining of the end for McCain? Palin's rapid decline will not help matters and may well accelerate the process. I feel sorry for McCain. It is a bad time to be a Republican Presidential Candidate. He gambled big time choosing Palin . He is now about to pay the price for this supreme folly.
Brian Musah, Hertford, UK
Thank god you Americans are seeing the light! I was worried this Palin circus act may sway the vote! What an insult to American woman that such an incompetent person was placed in such a role with little to back it up.
Obama inspires. The world will appreciate it if Obama gets elected.
Bart, Vancouver, Canada
Palin is now leda in the saddle bags. The whole Annie Oakley as political Karaoke Queen got old so fast. McCain is done. Stick a fork in him and turn him over.
The world may finally see a US president that is sharper than most of the people he engages with. Not before time either.
Pete Rivers, SF, USA
